The tour

A journey across Lake Victoria to Mabamba Swamp, one of the best places to meet the shoebill.

Departure

Nakiwogo, Entebbe

Duration

2–3 hours

From

$50 per person

How the day goes

  1. Meet at Nakiwogo

We meet you at Nakiwogo landing site in Entebbe and can advise on the easiest way to reach us.

  2. Cross to Mabamba Bay

A short boat ride takes you to the Mabamba wetland, one of Uganda's most important birding sites.

  3. Into the papyrus channels

Your guide poles a quiet wooden canoe through narrow channels lined with papyrus and water lilies.

  4. Time with the shoebill

When we find one, we hold position quietly so you can watch and photograph it up close.

  5. More wildlife on the way back

Jacanas, malachite kingfishers, herons, papyrus gonoleks, otters and monitor lizards are regulars.

Best time to go

Early morning is best: the birds are most active and the water is calm. We start at sunrise whenever possible; late afternoon is also good. The shoebill lives here all year round, so there is no bad season.

What to bring

  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Light rain jacket
  • Drinking water and a small snack
  • Insect repellent
